Riley Kerns, 24, has been living and breathing music for as long as he can remember.
Born just prior to the 1990s, Riley grew up in the small town of Berryville, VA, listening to the big sounds of the Beach Boys and the Beatles. His infatuation with the classic bands shifted to the funk and reggae stylings of groups like Sublime and 311 during his teenage years. Along the way he became dedicated to producing music himself, learning how to play the drums, piano and acoustic and bass guitars – of course, he also sang every chance he got.
From ages 12 to 23, Riley participated in several bands -- most notably, the Golden Butter Band. Only a senior in high school, Riley joined as the group's drummer and back-up vocalist, and stayed in the position until the five guys parted ways in 2012. The funky tunes and lyrics made for packed gigs and devout fans up and down the east coast. Riley learned a lot, but he knew it was time to persue his own place in the music scene.
Riley’s personal sound has grown to a distinctive one of pop infused with rock, retro, funk and reggae – feel good tunes that will leave you wanting more. In 2013, Riley worked with music and video producer Nick Marfing to create his ‘Summer EP’ album. The five tracks are radio-friendly, and two feature young and upcoming hip-hop artist Shane Moyer.
Since moving to Virginia’s capital in the Fall of 2013 to pursue more musical opportunity, Riley has been named a Featured Artist on Reverbnation.com, and his songs have been played on WAUG Raleigh, NC and 95.3 the Beach in Delaware. He is currently one of four finalists in the ‘Richmond’s Got Talent’ competition. Keep listening and watching for more from Riley this year.
